High heels give us women elegance, self-confidence, and allow us to emphasize our femininity. It is no secret that pregnancy has a similar effect on our psychology, as we go through a journey exclusively unique to women as we prepare to become mothers. But can high heels and pregnancy be compatible? Many pregnant women ask themselves: can I still wear high heels during pregnancy? However, the answer is not that simple and straightforward.
To answer this question, we need to understand what changes occur in our body during pregnancy and how wearing high heels changes our body. Wearing high heels can be harmful, especially if we do not take proper care of our feet.
CHANGES IN LOAD DISTRIBUTION
Wearing high heels changes the distribution of the load on the foot. A greater load is placed on the front part of the feet, on the joints, ligaments, and tendons located there. During pregnancy, due to increasing body weight, the body's center of gravity changes, so this load is even greater and the effect on the foot structure is stronger.
DURING PREGNANCY, DUE TO A CHANGE IN HORMONE BALANCE, LIGAMENTS IN THE FEET AND ANKLES LOOSEN.
Due to looser ligaments, there is a higher risk of injuries and joint damage, as they lose stability. Also, for these reasons, if you had foot deformities before pregnancy, they may progress faster. You have probably heard that women notice after pregnancy that they need larger shoes. And this is absolutely true!

LEG CRAMPS
When wearing high heels, the calf muscles are under greater strain, they are constantly tense, which increases the risk of cramps. During pregnancy, due to changes in hormone balance, nutrition, and nutrient absorption, the amount of electrolytes (calcium, magnesium) in the body changes. These changes also cause leg cramps.

LEG SWELLING
During pregnancy, due to poorer venous circulation (especially in later trimesters), leg swelling becomes more frequent, and varicose veins may form (superficial leg veins dilate, knots may form). High heels can worsen this condition due to muscle strain.
TO WEAR OR NOT TO WEAR?
During the first trimester of pregnancy, high heels can be worn, but try to do so for short periods and walk very carefully to avoid injuries. As a resident orthopedic traumatologist, I would suggest refraining from wearing high heels during later trimesters. Seeing how common injuries are when wearing high heels and how difficult they are to treat, I recommend protecting yourself and your unborn baby during pregnancy.
Put high heels aside during the second and third trimesters and choose comfortable footwear; you can enjoy high heels after childbirth!
If I still choose to wear high heels, how can I help myself?
- Assess your foot size changes and consider larger high heels.
- Choose platforms (wedges) and the lowest heel possible.
- Do foot exercises before and after wearing high heels, and if you feel foot pain, choose more comfortable shoes. (Read about foot exercises on our Instagram and other blogs)
- To avoid cramps, perform calf stretching exercises before and after wearing high heels. Take calcium and magnesium supplements (only after consulting your family doctor or gynecologist) and drink enough water.
-
To avoid leg swelling, avoid prolonged standing and shorten the time you wear high heels. Compression stockings can also help (consult your gynecologist about their selection).
And most importantly, walk slowly and carefully!
